230590237At SoCal Smiles Dentistry, Dr. Karafin and his team are committed to your family’s long-term oral health. Therefore, we believe that preventive exams and cleanings are two of the most important services that we offer. Even if you and your children practice great oral habits at home, professional care is essential if you want your beautiful smile to last for life. With cleanings, we can eliminate the bacteria and other substances that cause cavities. We can also check for the early symptoms of decay and gum disease, providing prompt care before these conditions cause extensive damage. Take advantage of this important aspect of family dentistry and ensure lasting dental wellness for you and your kids. To undergo a dental exam and cleaning, contact our Rancho Santa Margarita, CA practice today.

Why Are Dental Cleanings So Important?

You brush your teeth twice a day, and you have taught your children to do the same. You floss, use fluoride toothpaste, and follow all proper guidelines. Why do you need a dentist to clean your teeth, too?

Your mouth contains thousands of bacteria. Although brushing and flossing can certainly eliminate many of these microbes, you cannot eradicate them all. When they remain in your mouth, they will form a sticky substance called plaque, which will eventually harden into tartar. Plaque and tartar will attract bacteria, significantly raising your risk for cavities. Over time, the microbes will also spread below your gum line. You will develop gingivitis, and, without proper care, this condition will progress to full gum disease.

Dental cleanings are essential because your hygienist can remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Thanks to gentle techniques, even children and special needs patients will find the process easy and stress-free.

Why Are Dental Exams So Important?

Dental exams are vital for several reasons. First, we can detect the early signs of decay and gum disease. Though cleanings and at-home hygiene can greatly reduce your risk for these conditions, nothing can entirely eliminate the possibility of cavities. In most cases, we will take x-rays at every other visit. Dr. Karafin can also use our intraoral camera to examine your teeth. These tools will uncover small areas of decay, tiny cracks, and other problems that might not be visible to the naked eye. Additionally, Dr. Karafin and your hygienist will examine your gums, looking for inflammation and other symptoms of gum disease.

Oral cancer screenings are the second reason that routine exams are so important. Oral cancer is a serious disease, but it is typically beatable if your dentist can catch it in the early stages. At each visit, Dr. Karafin will look for lesions, white or red patches, chronic sores, and similar symptoms. If he sees anything unusual, he will usually refer you for a biopsy.

Who Should Receive an Exam and Cleaning?

Patients of all ages should have an exam and cleaning twice a year. Many parents assume that children do not need to visit the dentist until their permanent teeth start to erupt. Actually, children are just as vulnerable to cavities as their parents – and sometimes more so. Plus, with regular visits, we can guide kids in the best ways to care for their teeth. We encourage parents to bring their children in as early as age 3.

Routine care is also vital for seniors, even if they are missing all or most of their teeth. While wearing dentures, gum disease is still a major concern, as it can cause gum recession and bone loss. It can also compromise the longevity of dental implants.
